Instagram Threads is the talk of the social media world. In less than a full week over 100 million people have signed up for Meta’s “Twitter killer”. Everyone from CNBC pundits to influencers are raving about the fun of the app. “It’s like the old days of Twitter”. Whether it is Mark Zuckerberg trying to one up Elon Musk or there is simply a need for a text based social app, one thing is for certain, Threads is extremely popular. A catch 22 with a Threads profile is the fact that it is tied to an Instagram user’s profile. This means if you sign up for Threads you are basically creating a second Instagram account on another app.
In the early days, there is no way to delete a Threads profile without too deleting an Instagram profile. The fact that most social media users under the age of 40 are tied to their Instagram account means that most people will never even consider deleting their Threads profile even if they never use it. This is a feature that Meta absolutely knew they were doing to make the app look more popular than it is. Social media apps have always tried to inflate their user numbers to not only impress investors but to “fake it until they made it”. This is not uncommon in the Internet world as most influencers and celebrities bought followers at the beginning of their social media growth.
If you are hoping to delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account, that is not possible as of July 2023. As Meta continues to build out the app with search, trending topics, an explore page and many of the other common social media features we will likely be given an opportunity to delete a Threads account without deleting the Instagram account that is attached to it.
